Accessibility
Vetlantern is used in busy clinics, often on a phone with one hand. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 level AA, and we say below what has been checked and what has not.
What we have done
- Every form field and button has a name that a screen reader can read, and headings follow a logical order.
- Buttons and chips are at least 44 pixels tall on phones, so they are easy to press.
- Text colours meet the 4.5 to 1 contrast ratio in both the light and the dark theme. This is checked by a test on every change.
- A "Skip to content" link is the first stop when you use the Tab key.
- Animation is switched off when your device asks for reduced motion, and the 3D picture on the home page stops turning.
- Error messages and results that change are marked up so that screen readers can announce them.
- The app works at phone width and in light and dark themes, and its tools work offline once they are saved on the device.
- At 320 pixels wide, which is a 1280 pixel screen zoomed to 400 percent, every tool wraps its content instead of cutting it off or needing sideways scrolling. A browser test checks this on every change.
How we check
- An automated accessibility scan (axe) runs on the main screens, in both themes, on every change.
- A Lighthouse accessibility score of at least 95 is required on the key pages before a change is accepted.
- The screens we have measured score between 98 and 100.
Automated tools find only part of the problems. They cannot tell whether a screen is easy to use.
What has not been checked yet
We have not yet done the following, so we cannot say the app works well for these cases:
- Testing with screen readers (VoiceOver on iPhone and Mac, TalkBack on Android).
- A person completing the main tasks with the keyboard alone.
- Making the text larger on its own, without zooming the page, and zooming on a real device.
- A review of places where colour alone carries meaning, such as status labels.
- A text description of the twelve clinical areas for screen-reader users on the home page picture.
Tell us about a problem
If something is hard to use, write to hello@vetlantern.com and say which screen, what you were trying to do and what device or assistive tool you use. We read every message.
